There are lots of different ways to train dogs, from the basic commands to really complex and specialized tasks. There are many different things that a dog can be used for and individuals, law enforcement agencies and even the medical community are some that use them. Most dog owners only give their dogs a very basic kind of training, but dogs are able to do some impressive and valuable actions if you take the time to train them properly.

Many people will train dogs on how to rescue people that are trapped or in need. For example, if a person is lost in extreme weather, what will probably save them is a rescue dog that is properly trained. There are many areas for which rescue dogs are trained.

Dogs that are trained in this manner can deal with extreme climate and topography that is difficult to navigate. They must be comfortable with heights and have a good sense of balance, as many rescue operations take place in the mountains. Taught to track at an early age, these animals can follow the scent of a person in virtually any locality. Most people will agree that a dog does not need to have rescue training to protect you properly. Simply bring a dog with you when you go out into the woods or hiking for extra protection and safety.

It has been known for many centuries, if not longer, that dogs have a keen sense of smell. Used to find criminals and missing persons for decades, law enforcement has used dogs to find people by tracking their scent. Dogs can also find dead bodies, or cadavers, with ease. Even though the average dog owner may not need to teach their dogs how to track, it can be done. By taking an object that has the scent of a particular person and letting the dog smell it, they can track the odor. Teaching your dog to track many different scents is possible. As long as you reward them along the way, they will continue to be willing to learn how to track. Dogs are often used on hunting trips because they can smell different animals and track them for you.

The military often uses dogs for a variety of reasons. This goes back very far in history, but in modern times military dogs are especially useful for detecting the presence of explosives. This actually enables people to stay alive who would otherwise be killed by explosives and enemies that were nearby yet unseen. In a time of war, these dogs are absolutely necessary to protect the troops from enemy combatants, explosives, and to also protect their owners. Dog training for military dogs is consolidated to one specific base. Every military branch gets their dogs from this location.

For thousands of years, people have trained and used dogs to help them in their daily lives. Dogs have been used to track, protect, and hunt with mankind. Some people train dogs for special events in order to win a prize or a sum of money. You really are not limited in regard to the type of specialized dog training you can do with your dog. Good luck and happy training!
